Vodafone scores Red Shed wireless deal
Vodafone has won a four-year, 550-phone wireless office deal with the country's largest department store retailer, The Warehouse. The deal will see Vodafone's Wireless Office call plan connect The Warehouse's existing internal phone system to 550 mobiles. This will allow The Warehouse to ditch surplus landlines and means staff will be contactable wherever they are on the shop floor, on the road or overseas. The 550 connections include 60 3G Vodafone Mobile Connect cards and 30 Windows-based i-mate handheld business devices, as well as more than 200 3G mobiles. The Warehouse CIO Owen McCall says duplicated fixed lines and desk phones, and an oversupply of extensions, was costing the company a substantial amount of money. "During the mobility trial we ran prior to choosing Vodafone, we identified that mobilising our staff could save us money purely in time saved, as well as improving efficiency and productivity by providing the right information at the right time and in the right place to our staff." The deal followed a hotly-contested RFP involving an independent consultant and a 10-month evaluation process, as well as a 45-day mobility pilot.

Digicam platform integrates Wireless USB
Artimi Inc. has developed a small-format module pre-integrated into a digital still camera (DSC) reference platform to help manufacturers bring Wireless USB-enabled cameras to market more quickly. The camera uses embedded technology, not external Wireless USB dongles, for high-speed wireless data transfer of photos from the camera to a PC, printer, storage or display. High throughput rates Integrated Wireless USB makes it easier to use than plugging in an external dongle to download photos. Artimi's wireless technology promises high rates of real user throughput, allowing 1Gbyte of photos to download in about 30s. Artimi integrated its WiMedia-based Wireless USB module with the DSC platform used by multiple brand-name vendors of digital cameras. This pre-integrated reference design allows OEM and ODM camera vendors to add wireless connectivity to their existing platform without re-architecting the basic design or rewriting the core software.
