Finning bans use of cellphones

CALGARY (Sun Media) -- As evidence of the hazards of cellphone use behind the wheel continues to mount, Finning Canada has prohibited its employees from using the devices when driving. Finning, which distributes Caterpillar heavy equipment in Western Canada, announced that as of Jan. 1 it joined the Coalition for Cellphone-Free Driving and banned its employees from using wireless devices when driving on company time. The decision comes on the heels of a study done by Human Factors North Inc. for the University of Calgary which last week showed that distractions - such as speaking on a cellphone or any other wireless communications device - can lead to delayed response times and result in fatal collisions. The findings showed that when travelling at 55 kmh, a quarter-second delay translates into a travel distance of four metres, which can mean the difference between life and death for a pedestrian in the vehicle's path.
