Cable provider asks Congress to step in

Mediacom Communications Corp., a cable provider in smaller markets, asked Congress to intervene in its dispute with Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc., which has cut off network television service to 700,000 Mediacom subscribers, including some in the western Twin Cities area. A letter written by Mediacom Chairman Rocco Commisso responded to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission's refusal to order Sinclair to restore service to subscribers in markets such as Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Peoria, Ill., according to a statement Monday. In a separate release, Mediacom said it offered again to submit to arbitration with Sinclair. In the Twin Cities, where Comcast is the dominant cable company, Mediacom provides service to some communities around Lake Minnetonka. Commisso called on senators and representatives to hold hearings on the issue and urge the FCC to grant interim carriage of the stations while negotiations with Sinclair continue.
